A Thin Red Line

A THIN RED LINE

A Thin Red Line has just completed a 9-date tour of the Black Country, Birmingham and London. It is a new play exploring what it means to belong in present-day Britain.

Sonali Bhattacharyya was commissioned by Kali Theatre Company, Black Country Touring and the Birmingham Repertory Theatre to write a new play using the 60th Anniversary of Partition of India as a starting point.

Black Country Touring ran workshops with 5 distinct community groups exploring what partition meant to them today in Britain. The workshops were designed to stimulate the writer.

The story that evolved out of the process is about a relationship between a British Pakistani man and a white woman who fall in love, crossing cultural, religious and social divides. They return to the Black Country as the woman's mother is terminally ill. Their relationship is put to the test and they redefine who they are.
